Chapter Thirteen

December 6th

“So, the photo made it to the printer in time. It’s official. I will be Mr. December next year.”

“Oh, thank goodness. I was really worried I wouldn’t get to see you in a barely-there outfit for the holidays when I’m back in Arizona.”

For some reason, hearing his brother talk about Wyatt and women turned out to be a huge relief. I was no longer stressing myself about him. He was just a nice guy, who happened to be the sexiest man alive, who promised to do something for my aunt. I just happened to be the object of that promise he wanted to fulfill.

Which meant I could enjoy myself while I was here, but there was no shame with my life back there.

Arizona was home. I was comfortable with my apartment, job, and depending on the year, either Trevor or Adam.

“You’re going to order the calendar?” Wyatt looked surprised.

I grinned, sliding the block of chocolate to the side of the table to make room for my pot. “Obviously, I’m going to order a copy. My sister took a photo for it.”

Wyatt’s eyes stayed on mine. “That’s the only reason?”

“Yup.” I smiled wider. “What other reason would there be?”

Wyatt stepped a little closer. “I don’t know…maybe, me?”

“Wow. You do have a big head.” I opened my recipe book and stared at him.

“How’s Francisco?” Wyatt asked. “Did he miss me?”

I thought about lying, but I was never any good at it.

“Nope. Didn’t seem to remember you at all, actually. I’m not sure if he’ll ever forgive you for forcing that Santa hat on him. He snuggled right up to me last night. Not one growl. Not one snip. It was like we’ve been best friends since he was a pup.”

“Total traitor.”

I clapped my hands together. “What’s on the menu today?”

“Coconut bonbons and turtles.”

“Seriously?” Both of those sounded very advanced.

“Yep, and I think with what you know so far, you’ll have no problem filling a table at the Fireweed Christmas Market.”

I scrunched my nose and shook my head. “I don’t think I’m ready for that.”

“You are more than ready.”

“When is it?” I asked.

“December tenth.” He grinned. “You have four more days, and I can help you make more of everything you’ve learned so far.”

I let out a low, slow groan. “I just don’t know what I’d be getting out of it. I’ll be sitting in the cold, selling chocolates, and talking to strangers.”

Wyatt laughed and squeezed my shoulders from behind like he was a coach preparing his star quarterback. “They’re not strangers. They’re neighbors, and it won’t be cold because they have those neat things called heaters. It will be great.”

He let go of my shoulders, and I spun around to disagree, but the moment I did, he stepped closer and slowly cupped my face in his hands.

“I’ve been wanting to do this since I met you that night.” Wyatt leaned in slowly as his eyes stayed on mine, and my breath caught.

I never expected a kiss.

The moment his lips met mine, every part of me tingled with unexpected anticipation.
